In Amsterdam, thousands of people take the ferry across the River IJ every day. Simultaneously, citizens in Istanbul aboard one of the many ferries across the Bosphorus to get from the Asian part to the European part of the city. During this soundwalk you explore the water, looking for similarities and differences between these two cities. Many passengers regard the IJ and the Bosphorus not in terms of division but as connecting elements between geographically-separated parts of their lives. Work and home, study and going out, the kids’ school or shopping. For them, the crossing is a moment of peace in their daily urban routine. A chance to stare across the water and dream away to distant shores. Sail with them and let the special soundtrack entice you. While listening the river IJ will gradually transform into the Bosphorus. When you step off the ferry you are in Istanbul. The walk comes to an end at the Beursplein in the centre of Amsterdam. Welcome to the soundwalk ‘Untitled’ In this soundwalk the listener is guided by voices of famous people from foreign countries who talk about catastrophes that shocked their world. A soundwalk about how listening and sound can mediate the body’s movement and behavior in an architecturally defined environment at the Kop van Zuid as the other side of the world. Employing rhythm, tempo, timbre, frequency, duration and the wind, Maziar Afrassiabi and Katarina Zdjelar construct a listening experience, examining the relationship between architecture, site, the body and its movement.

Welcome to the soundwalk ‘The Hive’ by Jeroen Stout & Jan-Bas Bollen. Although this soundwalk is situated in Rotterdam, it tells a universal story that could take place in Tokyo, Seoul, or any other major city. All over the world, trolls (bullies) are making victims on the internet. The most prominent one is probably Choi Jin-sil, a famous Korean actress, who committed suicide in 2008. All the emails and posts which drove her to her death were translated into English. A group of actors were asked to re-enact the uproar in ‘The Hive’ just before and after her death. The architecture and the atmosphere of this area, ‘de Kop van Zuid’, are the perfect backdrop for the story of Choi Jin-sil. This map contains a suggested route. But the soundscape is not linked to any specific building or street. So, feel free to find your own way. Have a good look at this map before you head off. But don’t pay too much attention to it during the walk. You should enjoy the surroundings and, of course, the soundtrack. Just wander through the streets, like the restless soul of Choi Jin-sil. Imagine that behind all the windows around you, people are sitting behind their computer, writing emails, to you or about you. If you loose track, don’t worry. After all, this is a story of a woman who gets lost. Loosing track might even add an extra dimension to the experience. As they say in Korea: Even though words have no wings, they can still fly a thousand miles. NB: The best time for this soundwalk is just before or after sunset.

Welcome to the soundwalk ‘Of steel and water: the city tunes itself’ by Lee Patterson. The route you are about to walk has been especially chosen because of the sound recordings made along its’ way. These recordings have been used to create the compositions that correspond with each location. Many of the sounds originate within the materials around you along the walk, for example, the underground sewers beneath your feet, sounds from within the nearby river and docks, or the vibrations generated by passing traffic upon the Erasmus and other bridges. They represent a unique opportunity to hear hidden sound that exists within the everyday environment of this area. These vibrations are usually inaudible and have been recorded using contact microphones, hydrophones and small microphones placed inside local objects. In addition, near field radio emissions from the metro station at Wilhelminaplein were recorded with pick-up microphones.

Welcome to the soundwalk ‘untitled #290’. This soundwalk -which will take about an hour- consists of five audio pieces created exclusively from field recordings made in the actual specific locations where the listening takes place. The sound materials collected in each location have been extensively processed, mutated, edited, mixed, and composed into non-representational virtual aural micro-worlds. During the listening experience these pieces will mix to different degrees with the surrounding environment, depending on outside street noise. At times it may become difficult or nearly impossible to discern between “inside or transformed” and “outside or real” sonic perception. This is indeed an intentional feature of this soundwalk. Locations Each of the five listening locations indicated in the map has a corresponding audio track. These listening locations are not precise localised spots but areas which one can move through. Each track has been conceived to be listened to in its entirety before moving on to the next area. There is no need to rush: track durations allow one to slowly stroll through each area, even with occasional stops if desired. You can always pause the audio if you have reached of the end the audiotrack but have not reached the end of the area. Volume All audio has been engineered at relatively low volume levels, therefore the ideal listening volume for this soundwalk should be set at the maximum volume level of the iPod. Check please if your iPod is set at the maximum volume level! You can, of course, bring the volume down if you prefer a lower volume for some passages. Experience What you are about to experience in this soundwalk is a transmutation of the normal “reality” of the different locations into an unreal parallel sonic world. This sonic world has been solely created from that original everyday “reality”, without any additional sounds. There is no specific narrative in this sonic journey other than the one that you will inevitably create along the way depending on your personality, experience, imagination, character, and mood. Start The fundamental creative act is thus to a large extent in your hands now. Are you ready? The soundwalk starts at the backside of LantarenVenster at the waterfront. Please walk over there and start track 1. Enjoy the journey.
