De zwanenbloem (Butomus umbellatus) die in het symbool van de baron op het kasteel staat afgebeeld, is een plant op de grens tussen water en land. De tijd dat sloten er vol van stonden, ligt allang achter ons. Het tweede deel van haar Latijnse naam umbellatus, betekent letterlijk ‘met een scherm bloeiend’. De zwanenbloem bloeit lang, van mei tot september met in het begin bronsrode en later roze naar wit verkleurende bloemen.
