Eind de jaren ’50 startte de familie Kempynck een volkshogeschool in het kasteel De Blankaart. Deelnemers met uiteenlopende achtergrond leerden de problemen van natuur en samenleving kennen. De volkshogeschool was toonaangevend en droeg in belangrijke mate bij tot de ontsluiting van de Westhoek.
