Het Hageven maakt deel uit van het Natura 2000-netwerk. Dit Europees natuurnetwerk strekt zicht uit over 18% van het Europese grondgebied. Het is het grootste netwerk van beschermde gebieden in de wereld. De meest waardevolle en zeldzame soorten en habitats vinden er een plek.
Het LIFE-programma van de Europese Commissie zorgt voor steun voor het herstel van het Natura 2000-netwerk. In 2011 eindigde in het Hageven het project LIFE Dommeldal waarbij heel wat waardevolle natuur werd hersteld.
