In de Kempen vindt men op de heide nog heel wat vennen. Dit zijn ondiepe waterplassen die vooral met regenwater worden gevoed. Er groeien maar weinig planten in zulke voedselarme zure vennen, maar in en op het water krioelt het van het leven.
