Hier, tussen het Onze Lieve Vrouweplein en de Sint Servaasbrug bouwden de Romeinen in de vierde eeuw een ommuurde nederzetting om hun brug over de Maas te beveiligen. Deze nederzetting noemden zij 'Mosae Trajectum' (oversteekplaats door de Maas), het huidige Maastricht.
