Het open gebied (hier rechts) is een oud veengebied. Het ligt wat lager doordat hier turf is afgegraven dat vroeger als brandstof werd gebruikt. Het is nu een verlandingsgebied: dat is een vochtig, moerasachtig terrein dat langzaam dichtslibt en verdroogt. Eerst komt er pitrus te groeien, een grasachtige plant, en daarna duiken er jonge vliegdennen en berken op. En zonder begrazing zal het moeras na verloop van tijd in een bos veranderen.
