This tree is surrounded by an iron fence and has a stone that is placed there in honour of the enthronement in 1898. The new tree has replaced the old tree, on the pictures from the 1930ties one can see the original tree. The original tree was felled during the second world war in order to be used as firewood. In 1980 the designated spot for the tree needed to change. So they planted a new tree. This third tree represents the bond with the dutch royal house. At the other side of the Nassau-square you can find the sculpture by Domela Nieuwenhuis. A thing worth knowing is that the artist, an anarchist, was completely opposed to the ruling of King Willem III, Wilhelmina's father.
