There used to be strongholds on the inner city side of the Singelgracht, these were the ancient defence lines constructed in the golden age. After 1840 they were no longer used as such and became park or square. During this time the outer rim was also provided with parks such as Frederik Hendrikplantsoen, Bilderdijkpark, Leidsebosje and the Vondelpark. At the Rotterdammer bridge you can see that the park: 1e Marnixplantsoen used to be a stronghold. At the other side of the canal on top of the building "Nassaukade 48" stands a sculpture "het tegenbeeld" ---"the antitype"---- that reflects with the tower on the other corner.
