In the year 1935 the urban structure for Amsterdam and its surroundings became what is called garden cities and work areas. In order to separate the garden cities from the work area's green buffers were created. The area called Bretten was such a green buffer. On the right one can see the allotments, small vegetable allotment gardens mainly used to cultivate vegetables and potatoes. After the second world war the purpose of the allotments became cultivating flowers and evoking relaxation. On the left side it stretches parallel to the Haarlemmertrekvaart, the very first waterway in the Netherlands, constructed in 1632. It was at that time the main route from Amsterdam to Haarlem.
