The entire premises of the Westergasfabriek was designated as a natural park area in the year 1866. However, in 1891, due to the size of the industrial complex, a far smaller area was realised as a park. From 1990 onwards rare trees have been planted. Since 1986, this entrance is marked by the colourful sight of Schierbeek. Right across from the entrance stands a statue by Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis. He lived from 1846 to 1919 and was a very wealthy Lutheran priest. He is regarded as one of the incubators of the socialistic movement in the Netherlands.
