Mariëndaal kent grote hoogteverschillen van wel dertig meter. Deze landschapsvorm is ontstaan in de voorlaatste ijstijd, zo'n 150 duizend jaar geleden. Een beekdal met sprengenbeekjes en watervallen. Rond 1392 stond in dit gebied een Augustijnenklooster "Domus Fontis Beatae Mariae" (het huis bij de bron van Maria). Het enige wat er nog van over is, is een grafzerk. Sinds 1936 is het landgoed in bezit van Gelders Landschap en Kastelen.
